What's New at Mont Marie Health Care Center

March 2010
Mont Marie Health Care Center Scores Highest in Western Mass on Family Survey
The Mont Marie Health Care Center, a not-for-profit skilled nursing facility owned and operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, was among 430 nursing homes surveyed by the state last fall.

The Health Care Center scored 4.79 in overall satisfaction, well above both the statewide average of 4.22 and the Western Mass average of 4.20 (on a scale of 1-5).

Health Care Center residents enjoy an event on the patioWhen asked if they would recommend the Mont Marie Health Care Center to a friend or family member, 98% of the respondents said “yes.”  Commenting on the high score, Center Administrator Sister Elizabeth Sullivan said, “The numbers indicate the trust level and credibility that family members have in our staff, who respond to the needs of residents on a daily basis with compassion, respect and diligence.”A resident gets a hug from a Mont Marie Child Care Center preschooler during a Halloween visit.

The survey collected detailed information about nursing home staff, physical environment, activities, personal care services, food and meals and resident’s personal rights.  It also asked respondents to rate overall satisfaction and ability to meet residents’ needs.  Surveys were mailed to approximately 34,600 family members of nursing home residents across the state.

This is the third time the state has conducted this survey.  The Mont Marie Health Care Center scored 4.64 in 2005 and 4.63 in 2007.

New Family-style Dining ProgramFirst floor residents of the Mont Marie Health Care Center enjoy the social and culinary benefits of the Dining In program.
First floor residents are now enjoying a new dining program. Linen-covered tables greet the diners in the bright, first floor solarium for their mid-day meal.

After being seated, residents choose from the day’s menu selections.  They are then served by staff from kitchen carts.

The program is designed to more closely resemble a family-style dining experience, allowing residents to socialize before, during and after the meal.

The program costs a bit more than traditional dining service; some of that cost is being funded by the Sisters of St. Joseph Golf Classic.

The program also requires more work on the part of the kitchen staff and the Health Care Center employees.  But judging by the reaction of the residents, it is well worth it.  Mrs. Rose Mengel and Sr. Maria Louise London, when asked their opinion, said, “It’s great to be able to choose from the menu or the backup that is there.  Everything is so tasty.”

New Furniture for Residents
Several rooms now sport brand new furniture, thanks to everyone who supported the annual Sisters of St. Joseph Golf Classic last August.  The proceeds from the tournament were used to purchase bed-side cabinets, bureaus, over-the-bed tables and room chairs.

The purchase also included three electric beds, new dining room chairs and three scoot chairs.  Scoot chairs are similar to wheel chairs, but allow non ambulatory residents to use their feet to “scoot” along unassisted.

The golf tournament has provided monies for several improvements in the Mont Marie Health Care Center over the years.

Dec. 2008
Mont Marie Health Care Center Receives 5-Star Rating

The Mont Marie Health Care Center is one of only two area nursing homes to receive the highest five-star rating from the federal government.  The 84-bed facility is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield and is located on the Mont Marie campus in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rated the facility for health inspections, staffing and quality measures in the first of what will be monthly nationwide rankings.  Staff and residents use the newly-renovated elevator

The Center’s Administrator, Sister Betsy Sullivan, said she attributes the high rating in part to the longevity of staffing and good working environment.  “The low employee turnover reaps many benefits for the residents.” Sullivan said.   She added that administrators and staff take care to provide for the residents’ emotional and spiritual needs as well their physical needs.

Mont Marie Health Care Center is a skilled nursing facility that provides long-term care as well as short-term rehabilitation.  Services include physical, speech and occupational therapy, wound care, pain management, nutritional needs and hospice care.  Originally built as an infirmary for the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Center has been open to the public since 1995.

Young, Old Hands Join to Create Unique Artwork
Stanley Park in Westfield was alive with more than its famous roses on a recent sunny day.  The park was the setting of a unique intergenerational art project involving children from the Mont Marie Child Care Center, residents of the Mont Marie Health Care Center and retired Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield.

The outing began with a tour of the park’s extensive rose garden, which was followed by theMont Marie Health Care Center Resident Elizabeth Hebert, helps a youngster from the Mont Marie Child Care Center blend colors during a joint art project at Stanley Park in Westfield. creation of paintings inspired by nature in the park as well as the lyrics of the song “What a Wonderful World.”  The seniors and the pre-schoolers paired up for the painting project, led by retired art teacher Emma Hayward.

The artwork will help decorate the walls of the Mont Marie Senior Residence, a HUD-funded senior housing facility slated to open in September on the Mont Marie campus in Holyoke.

The event was funded by donations from the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, King Ward Trailways and Chartpak.

Simulated Sports Game Entertains Residents
A resident tries her hand at the Wii simulated bowling game at the Mont Marie Health Care Center.Residents of the Health Care Center can now go bowling, or play baseball, tennis or golf right in the first floor solarium – at least virtually!  The Activities Department purchased the popular simulated sports game called Wii for the use of the residents.  The game allows people to “play” the sport by swinging and controlling a hand-held remote.  The player’s action is then simulated on a large screen TV.

Although it took a few practice turns at one recent session, someActivities Director Elaine Cat applauds a good "throw" in the simulated bowling game, Wii. residents got the hang of the bowling game, even bowling a few spares!   After watching for awhile, one thing became evident: there were as many laughs as points scored, but who’s counting?!

Residents Enjoy Health Care Center Van

Trips to the Butterfly House, a local marina and doctors appointments are possible with a specially equipped van.  The vehicle allows the Center to transport a combination of wheelchair-bound and ambulatory passengers. Residents enjoy foliage rides in the fall and trips to the ice cream shop in the summer.   The van was purchased with donated funds and profits from the Sisters of St. Joseph Golf Classic.  The residents and staff are very grateful for the efforts of everyone who helped make the purchase possible.

14th Annual SSJ Golf Classic

Big Success

Cloudless skies and low humidity made for a beautiful day on the course for everyone participating in the 14th Annual Sisters of St. Joseph Golf Classic at the Springfield Country Club August 30, 2010.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Mont Marie Health Care Center.  Funds raised at last year's event were used to help purchase new furniture at the  Center, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield.  The Center's administrator, Sr. Betsy Sullivan, says the Center was able to replace beds, dressers, over-the-bed tables and some room chairs with the funds.

Past tournaments have raised money for a new elevator, sprinkler system, a new entrance, a handicap van and a new phone system.

Sister Betsy and the Sisters of St. Joseph extend their sincere thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and players who participated this year and  we look forward to seeing all of you again next year!
